Yankees vs. Senators, 16 August 1925
Home plate umpire Dick Nallin prepares to make the call as New York Yankees' 1st baseman, Lou Gehrig, slides into home while the Washington Senators' catcher, Hank Severeid, waits for the ball, Griffith Stadium, Washington D.C.
This play took place during 3rd at bat for the Yankees during the 4th inning. Vean Gregg had just replaced Dutch Ruether as the Senators' pitcher. Gehrig was the first batter of the inning and hit a double. Joe Dugan advanced Gehrig to 3rd with a sacrifice fly. This photo takes place during the next at bat, Yankees' catcher, Benny Bengough.
Bengough laid out a sacrifice bunt, but the fielder decided to try for the put out at home plate, allowing Bengough to make it to 1st. It was a close play as we can see where the ball bounced off the 1st base line and is seen blocking Gehrig's left elbow about one foot from Severeid's mitt. Unfortunately, the throw was a bit wide and Severeid missed it. Benbough then advanced to second and this throw was deemed an error by Joe Harris, the 1st baseman.
